Colloquium: “Reconceiving Constitutivism” by Avery Archer (George Mason University)

February 7 @ 3:10 pm - 5:00 pm

ABSTRACT: According to the cognitivist account of practical rationality, the means-end coherence norm governing intention may be explained in terms of the closure norm governing belief. One longstanding objection to the cognitivist account, due to Michael Bratman, is that there are cases in which an agent satisfies the closure norm governing the belief that they will perform a certain action and yet fail to satisfy the means-end coherence norm governing their intention to perform that very action. This paper advances a novel version of cognitivism—called acceptance cognitivism—which not only avoids the above objection, but also offers a single explanation of the closure norm governing belief and the means-end coherence norm governing intention.
