Philosophy Conferences at UC Riverside

NORMATIVITY & UNIVERSALITY FROM A KANTIAN PERSPECTIVE

February 24 & 25, 2006

University of California, Riverside

16th Annual Philosophy Conference

Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Room 1500

Normativity & Universality from a Kantian Perspective

We understand our topic for the conference, "Normativity and Universality from a Kantian Perspective," in rather broad terms. Thus, rather than inviting Kant scholars in the narrower sense, we are inviting very prominent philosophers who have been influenced in their own work by Kant and who bring an independent philosophical perspective to Kant's work in ethics, aesthetics, epistemology and metaphysics. We shall explore how our cognitive activities in these different areas of philosophy can be brought together under the guise of their normative structure. The topics we will explore include the role of norms and general principles in perception, in our cognition of abstract entities, in moral appraisal and in the more general appraisal of action.
